Why are we doing this?

NCDs are rampant today; these days there isn’t a household that isn’t touched by diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s/Parkinsons’s, or one of the other NCDs. And all indications are that the situation is getting worse with every passing day. By 2030, NCDs will account for 75% of all deaths worldwide, increasing from 50% in 2020.

On some level, everybody knows that the unnatural and unhealthy lifestyle is causing all the NCDs. And yet most people don’t do anything about it. There are two main reasons for it:

  • It is not a trivial task to figure out what exactly to do especially in today’s age of information overload where there is so much confliting information out there.
  • Even if you figure out what to do, doing it is hard. Adhering to it in the long-term is even harder.
  • That is why we have figured out a systematic approach that can help you truly transform your health. And we have a strong focus on adherence.

Prashant got high blood sugar and high blood pressure becaue of the steroids that he was given in the Covid hospital. But he did an incredible amount of research, figured out that improving his metabolic health with carbohydrate restriction was the way to go, and reversed both these conditions my giving up sugar, wheat, and rice. He says, “Knowing what I know now, it feels almost criminal not to share it with the world. That is why I am passionate to help other people also overcome their NCDs. The current healthcare system is working great for everbody except us, the people suffering from NCDs. It is time to take back control of our health. That’s why I spent nine months of my life to write ‘My Health My Responsibility: A Systematic 15-Step Approach to Take Control of Your Health’. The approach that I came up with in MHMR eveolved into the 1Step Approach.”

We found a beautiful use case for GenAI while implementing our ‘Adherence Engine’. So, we went ahead and used it. If you want to do anything big, you can’t do it without the help of technology. That is why we are building a platform with a solid foundation which will allow us to scale. However, we never let ourselves forget that technology is only a means to an end, not an end in iteslf. And it can never be more than the users and their experience while using the technology.

Why are we doing this?

WHO | WHY | WHAT

Because the feeling that you get when you help someone get healthy is second to none!

Prashant got high blood sugar and high blood pressure because of the steroids that he was given in the Covid hospital. But he did an incredible amount of research, figured out that improving his metabolic health with carbohydrate restriction was the way to go, and reversed both these conditions my giving up sugar, wheat, and rice.

He says, “Knowing what I know now, it feels almost criminal not to share it with the world. That’s why I share my research findings freely. That’s also why I write the book. Till date a few hundred people have told me that they transformed their life thanks to me! That feeling is out of this world!”

But why be happy with helping hundreds when I can help hundreds of thousands?

Because it is the need of the hour!

NCDs are rampant today; these days there isn’t a household that isn’t touched by diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s/Parkinsons’s, or one of the other NCDs. And all indications are that by 2030, NCDs will account for 75% of all deaths worldwide, increasing from 50% in 2020.

On some level, everybody knows that the unnatural and unhealthy lifestyle is causing all the NCDs. And yet most people don’t do anything about it because:

  • It is not easy to figure out exactly whatto do, especially in today’s age of information overload where there is so much conflicting information out there.
  • Even if you figure out what to do, doing it is hard. And adhering to it in the long-term is harderbecause the food environment is absolutely horrendous! Healthy food is scarce and expensive, while junk food is plentiful and cheap!

That is why we have figured out a systematic approach that can help you truly transform your health. And we have a strong focus on adherence.

What is our Mission?

Our mission is to make a positive impact in the lives of 1 million people by the end of 2027. Once we achieve the goal, we will set an even loftier goal to achieve by the end of 2030.

What is our Approach?

WHO | WHY | WHAT

Our approach is built on the following foundational principles : The human body is the result of milions of years of evolution. The cells and other microorganisms that are part of the human body are the result of bilions of years of evolution.

Consequently, the human body knows how to get and stay healthy. But it can’t do that if it doesn’t get what it needs: proper nutrition and enough stimulus.

So, not getting proper nutrition and not enough stimulus is the root cause of all diseases.

Most people don’t get proper nutrition these days because of two factors :

1) Too much of the bad stuff (sugar, refined carbs, junk food, smoking, alcohol). Also, since this stuff bypasses the satiety mechanisms, people eat it too often, i.e. they engage in frequent eating.

2) Not enough of the good stuff (real food). Even people who eat real food might not get proper nutrition because food isn’t as nutritious as it used to be. Also, many time it is sprayed with herbicides and pesticides which have adveerse effects on your health.

Chronic stress (i.e. stress on a regular basis) is one of the direct causes and makes it harder for your body to get and stay healthy.

When your body doesn’t get proper nutrition and enough stimulus for years together, you first start getting minor health complaints like acidity, headaches, joint pain, skin problems, stomach problems, etc.

If you don’t do anything to address the root cause of these complaints, you eventually develop one or more of the ‘lifestyle diseases’ like abdominal obesity, anxiety/depression, elevated blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and kidney/liver/thyroid problems, which can everntually lead to pre-diabetes/diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

We have been led to believe that many of these diseases are chronic and progressive (i.e. they get worse with time) and can only be managed with pharmaceutical drugs. However, that is not true.

In most cases, it is possible to stop the progression of these lifestyle diseases. In many cases, it is also possible to put them in remission.

The way to do it is to give your body what it wants: proper nutrition and enough stimulus.

You give it proper nutrition by eating healthy food (the good stuff) and not eating unhealthy stuff. Even if you start eating more healthy food and less unhealthy food, you will start seeing positive changes.

You give it enough stimulus by leading a more active lifestyle (more steps per day) with regular exercise of different types (moderate intensity cardio, HIIT, strength training, and stretching/balancing/flexibility exercises).

It is important to manage your stress levels (by doing breathing exercises, chanting, and meditation, and getting enough rest and sleep. Last but not the least, it is very important to live life with a sense of purpose and having meaningful relationships.

However, no two people are the same. Their genes, oral & gut microbiome, and current health status are different. So, any strategy/plan/recommendation is not equally aplicable to everybody. Not only that, it is not equally applicable to the same person at different points in time because their health status is always changing.

It is okay to follow an extreme approach for a short time. However, in the long-term, it is usually best to follow a ‘balanced’ approach.

When it comes to food, health and taste are not mutually exclusive. Said differently, food can be healthy and tasty at the same time.

You can’t buy or cheat your way to good health. You have to earn it by adhering to a healthy diet and lifestyle every day.

Built on top of these foundational principles, our approach is as follows :

Create top-quality content

The first step in making fundamental changes in one’s life is the awareness about why those changes need to be made. That is why we create top-quality content: to increase your awareness about various health-related topics.

Focus on adherence

While it is important to have awareness about what to do and not to, it is much more important to actually do (or stay from) it. Adherence is at the bottom of every diet/exercise/lifestyle pyramid. In other words, ahderence is the most important factor in any diet/exercise/lifestyle plan. Because you won’t get results from the best plan in the world if you don’t follow it!

Onboard coaches on to the platform

Some activities that you can do with the help of the 1Step app are more amenable to DIY (Do-It-Yourself) mode. However, for many activities, people need coaches. That is why we onboard good coaches on to the platform. And these coaches specialize in various aspects of health improvement/transformation: diet, exercise, lifestyle, de-addiction counselling, and alternate medicine (Ayurveda, homeopathy, and others).

Curate and sell the best off-the-shelf products

Many different off-the-shelf products are required to improve one’s health. That is why we curate the best products for each activity that you can do using the 1Step app. And that is how we have categorized the products as well: by the activities that they are related to. Why create some other category structure when the activities provide the context and therefore the perfect categorization? For each product category, we curate inexpensive, great value for money, and premium products. SO, no matter what your budget, you will find a product in the 1Step store that fits your budget!

Gamify user actions

As a matter of principle, nothing in teh 1Step app is free. However, we have created a complete gamification framework which allows you to ‘earn’ points which you can redeem to buy (or get a discount on) many of the products that are available in the 1Step app.

One of the actions that you earn points for is for referring your family/friends/acquaitances to the 1Step app. Not only that, you will also earn points whenever they spend money on the 1Step app to buy our products/services.

Start online classes

Many people prefer to do things in a group, which is why we have started three online classes. Since a lot of people join these classes, we can offer them at very attractive prices while still ensuring that we and our coaches make a decent chunk of change. It is a true win-win-win!

Offer DIY Activities

We have come up with 20+ atomic habits that can make a profound impact on your health and overall well-being, especially if you stack them on top of each other. And we have created an ‘Adherence Engine’ (powered by GenAI technology) to help you adhere to these habits in the long-term!

What is our story?

Prashant (the Founder of 1Step) got a fairly bad episode of Covid in March 2021 during the Delta wave. He had to be admitted to the hospital where he was administered three antibiotics, two antivirals, and steroids, which was the standard protocol at the time. In hindsight, the treatment was a lot worse than the disease and it messed him up badly. It gave him high blood sugar (a known side-effect of steroids) and high blood pressure (in large part *due to* the high blood sugar). His fasting glucose was 300, PP was 596, and HbA1c was 11.7!!!

He started taking hypoglycaemics (for controlling blood sugar) and anti-hypertensives (for controlling blood pressure). In the next few months, he was able to bring those numbers down and also taper the medicines a bit but not beyond a certain point. That’s when he started researching ‘ways to reduce blood pressure naturally’ and stumbled on the huge body of literature that exists out there on ‘metabolic syndrome’.

On 1st December 2022, he gave up sugar, wheat, and rice, and got miraculous results! He was able to get off the anti-hypertensives in sixteen weeks and hypoglycaemics in twenty weeks, which was his primary objective. In 2023, he also lost 10 kgs in weight, 2.5 inches in waist circumference, and 90% of his belly fat, without any side-effects.

Prashant wanted others to benefit from his research as well. So, in 2023, he spent a good amount of time writing a book titled ‘My Health My Responsibility: A Systematic 15-Step Approach to Take Control of Your Health’ (or MHMR in short). It was a mammoth effort that took him nine months to go from idea to printed copies of the book. The 15-step approach follows the ‘Big Rocks Principle’; the first 7 steps are rocks (most impactful), the next 5 are pebbles (less impactful), and the last 3 are sand (even less impactful).

One other thing that happened in 2023 was that people started noticing the physical changes that were happening in Prashant. They started asking him, “How is this magic happening? What the heck are you doing?” Prashant started sharing the knowledge that he had gained through his extensive research. Then one day, a friend of his said, “I have neither the time nor the inclination to properly understand what you are telling me. Why don’t you just tell me what to do?” That’s how Prashant got his Unofficial Client #1! 🙂

Prashant teamed up with Dr. Rashmi Sankhe-Patil (one of the advisors of 1Step) and started helping other people reverse their metabolic conditions/diseases. In the process of doing that, he found that for many people it was very hard to follow the advice that they were giving. That’s when he decided to create an app to help people form good habits and break bad ones.

He also realized that for most people, it actually makes a lot of sense to make the least impactful changes first and get some quick and easy wins under their belt before attempting to make the challenging or difficult changes. This goes against the grain of MHMR but is a practical approach that most need to take. An example of challenging changes are incorporating a workout 45 minutes of workout 6 days a week and making the necessary changes to the diet to support that. Quitting/reducing smoking and stopping/reducing the consumption of sugar, refined carbs, junk food, and alcohol and examples of changes that are difficult to make for most people because they are so addictive!

That’s why and how the 1Step app was conceptualized.

Last but not the least, the word doctor comes from the Latin word docēre, meaning ‘to teach’. All the medical advisors of 1Step are teachers at heart, and therefore doctors in the tru sense of the word! Prashant is a teacher at heart too! That is why learning is such an important part of 1Step and will always be. And we will make learning possible in different modes: selp-paced courses, expert talks, and lecture series.
